Uptempo Drum Solo on Cotton Tail

Soojin Suh

Jazz
Drums

Transcription of uptempo solo from Soojin Suh. This solo has a lot of great takeaways: 1. Continuous, effortless flowing movement around the entire kit with intuitive sticking choices 2. The hi hat foot (both splash and chick) is treated as another voice, not just used to keep time 3. Clear Philly Joe Jones influence, particularly in the sleek application of rudiments, and snare-focused phrasing. It definitely has a more modern feel though. I've notated all of the non-obvious sticking. Where sticking isn't notated, it's either obvious, or singles.

Stablemates Bebop Drum Intro

Philly Joe Jones

Jazz
Drums

A classic Philly Joe Jones drum solo, at around 200 BPM, from Stablemates on Big Band Sounds (Drums Around the World). Contains lots of classic Philly Joe Jones "isms", like the "RLL RLR RLL" sticking for fast groups of 9, "rrL" drags orchestrated around the kit, and stick shots for interesting accent texture.

ZachGrooves Triplet Jazz Comping

ZachGrooves

Jazz
Drums

In his "10 Types of Jazz Drummers" YouTube video, ZachGrooves does a "Diarrhoea of the Hands" bit that playfully mocks an extremely busy, complex jazz comping style. However, a lot of people think it sounds great (just check the comments)! It has a rolling triplet feel, is filled with lots of nice articulations and textures (rim shots, cross sticks, buzz presses), and uses the hi hat as a third comping voice as opposed to just keeping time.

Uptempo Bebop Solo on Two Bass Hit

Philly Joe Jones

Jazz
Drums

Philly Joe Jones' iconic uptempo solo on Two Bass Hit, off of the Milestones album from Miles Davis. Lots of classic Philly Joe Jones vocabulary. Snare-focused phrasing, bouncy conversation between the snare and bass drum, classic Philly Joe Jones-isms (like the "RLL RLR RLL" triplet sticking for groups of 9), and interesting textures (stick shots and buzz presses). A great solo to learn for bebop vocabulary!

Uptempo Comping Style Jazz Drum Solo

Kai Craig

Jazz
Drums

Modern, complex, uptempo broken-time comping work from Kai Craig. There's lots of 3/4 over 4/4 in the ride cymbal pattern variation, and some interesting 3 over 4 subdivisions around the toms on the kit. Came across this video on Instagram and had to transcribe and learn it - give it a listen!
